Senior Backend Engineer
At Sano, we are accelerating precision medicine research by building a platform that makes large-scale genetic testing studies faster and easier. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will lead the design, architecture, and implementation of critical platform components, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and mentor engineers while driving the technical vision to support our mission.

Role - Senior Backend Engineer
Salary - Β£75,000 - 85,000
Location - Remote, UK only
This role is for you if:
- Have 6+ years of experience in backend engineering, with extensive experience in Python.
- Experience in technologies such as TypeScript/Node.js, or Go, and have experience with SQL and ORMs like SQLAlchemy.
- Are skilled in designing and implementing scalable REST APIs and leading API strategy.
- Possess leadership and mentoring experience, supporting engineers of all levels in a collaborative environment.
- Have worked in fast-paced environments and can adapt to evolving challenges.
- Are experienced in collaborating with cross-functional, diverse teams using Agile methodologies.
Even better if you:
- Knowledge of API security best practices and experience implementing secure, scalable solutions.
- Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, with a solid understanding of cloud architecture.
- Familiarity with DevOps tools such as Docker and CI/CD pipelines.
- Expertise in performance optimisation and monitoring system metrics.
- A proactive approach to improving developer experience and team productivity.
What you'll be doing:
- Lead Technical Design: Architect, build, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance server-side services and applications.
- Mentor and Guide: Provide mentorship and technical leadership to junior and mid-level engineers, fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment that encourages growth and knowledge sharing.
- Drive Innovation: Design, implement, and maintain reliable, high-performing APIs and integrations, aligning them with business objectives while maintaining security and scalability.
- Strategic Collaboration: Partner with product managers, front-end developers, and other stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that meet evolving business needs.
- Ensure Quality: Lead code reviews, track and manage technical debt, and improve code quality through testing and best practices.
- Optimise System Performance: Monitor and enhance system performance metrics like uptime and response times, ensuring consistent reliability and performance.
- Security Leadership: Implement and continuously monitor security measures to protect against vulnerabilities and ensure system resilience.
- Continuous Improvement: Refactor and improve existing services, ensuring scalability, system efficiency, and best practices across the team.
- Documentation: Lead efforts to improve documentation practices, ensuring clear and concise guidance for APIs, code, and processes.
