Python Software Engineer
Job Description:
Working within the specialist Underwriting Data Services team at CFC, your role will be in developing our proprietary data collection platform, solving data problems that are key to the future of insurance. This means being involved in the design and implementation of new data capabilities (aggregation, ingestion, event handling), as well as improving the quality of data produced by current data enrichment processes.
The Underwriting Data Services team is transforming the use of data in commercial insurance. Our in-house data platform collects large volumes of data on our clients in real-time from internal, open source and proprietary data sources. Underwriting Data Services help CFC learn as much as possible about each client and CFC uses this data to deliver innovation in how insurance decisions are made across all lines of business.
About the Role:
Within this role, you will be expected to:
- Use our standard tech stack is Python, Linux (via WSL), PostgreSQL, running on Azure and AWS.
- Develop and improve data modules that run on our distributed platform.
- Work with infrastructure teams to ensure appropriate services are provisioned to support pipelines.
- Expose source data in a consumable way to stakeholders for both transaction & analytical purposes.
- Identify root causes of issues that lead to the generation of incorrect data or gaps in existing collection mechanisms.
- Evaluate new sources of data on our SME client base.
- Assist in maintaining cloud infrastructure and supporting the continuous development/deployment cycle.
- Write technical and non-technical documentation.
About you:
When you join CFC’s Underwriting Data Services team, you will use data to grow CFC’s competitive advantage in the insurance market’s “data arms race” while working side by side with the team’s Data Science function. Your job will be to research, develop and implement new functionality that will impact how CFC underwrites each risk. This will be critical to the profitability of the business. Improving functionality could be increasing the coverage, accuracy or speed of data collection or using a new data source that increases understanding of our customers.
You will understand current business requirements, along with the long-term vision for Underwriting data, and forge solutions that allow value to be delivered now while minimizing long-term technical debt. You will also be involved in leveraging our cloud infrastructure, as well as DevOps toolsets used to build and run our systems.
